What did we do today?
Well, we woke up from sleeping on a camping pad. I'm really too old to sleep on a camping pad. But I slept okay. And then we went to Swarthmore, PA, where we visited a Co-Op, borrowed a car, and read the American Heritage Cookbook, 1956 edition. Not in that order. I met some more of my fiancee's family, and they seemed to like me. And then we set out to find Pat's Cheese steaks.
We did find Pat's Cheese steaks, or Pat's Steaks, rather, it has a homey drip-some-cheez-wiz-on-the-sidewalk kind of ambiance. I've never seen a number 10 tin of Cheez Wiz before. It was really really yummy. Sort of the perfect blend of shredded beef, fat and salt. Then we went across the street, to Geno's. And we tried Geno's. And the meat was cut thicker, so it had more of a meat flavor, but it did not have more of a cheese steak flavor. That is, the flavor you associate with cheese steak. We got cheese fries, too, and those were okay, but Pat's was the winner. It is worth noting that Pat's has homemade cherry soda and Geno's has birch beer. We had a root beer. Then we wandered around the Italian Market. For me it was a wonderful experience, because I love open markets. I like seeing, you know, whole... dead... lambs. And whole dead fish. And whole dead strawberries. That kind of thing. The live squab did make me sad, because even though they're just pigeons, and pigeons are disgusting, you shouldn't kill them and eat them and put them in a cage. We went to a spice market and got ground cardamom, so now I'm going to make Swedish Tea Ring. It's like Hot Cross Buns, only I don't feel as morally bad about bringing Swedish Tea Ring to a family celebration. And her family seems to like me. That's really weird. And when her family gets together, there's no yelling. It's... kind of boring, in a really soothing way. And then we found Isgro's Bakery. Where people were turning away because there was a huge line, and I kept telling them (because I was outside the door for the last part) that, really, we hadn't spent more than ten minutes in there, but they didn't believe me and turned and walked away. No canoli for them. Suckers. We got a pound of assorted italian little biscuits and canoli. And we got roses in a pot for my fiancee's mom, who I really can't think of as my mother-in-law, because she's way nicer than any mother-in-law. We walked back to the car from the Italian Market, and everything was shuttered and clean and the little barrel fires were put out, and it was sad. And we drove home in what was apparently five o'clock traffic, although we thought it was six o'clock, because our time piece of choice was an hour ahead.
And now I'm reading, and waiting for the Big Family Dinner, and I, at least, am not dreading this. Tomorrow is my birthday. Go, me. I'm having a really relaxing weekend in the country, and I hope everyone else is as well.
Maybe I'll be in the bar tonight. Hee.
