Baruch ata Hashem, eleoheinu Melekh ha-olam, dayan emes.

He wasn't my spiritual leader, and many of his policies excluded me and my loved ones, but I think he did his best in a rapidly changing world, and he tried to undo the silence and blindness cemented by Pius X.

Yeah. I don't what to make of him either. A flock needs a shepard, and he labored mightily at it and succeeded. I think I would be more resentful if I were actually a member of said flock. Go in peace.

That's how I feel. I turned on the TV to watch the BSG miniseries with my 13-year-old sister, and saw the special on the Pope, and paused to watch it for a moment. I said, quietly, "it's so sad that he's gone."

Her: Why?
Me: He was a great man.
Her (scornfully): He was a Christian.
Me: And so are lots of good people. He did a lot of good things, and touched a lot of people in a lot of ways. He had a full life, but it's still sad that such a special person is gone.
Her: Oh.

And then we watched the news about the Pope for a few minutes.

I think it was the general kind of religious superiority kids have. Not that she thought Christians were bad people - just that it hadn't occured to her that I could mourn a Christian and call him a great man. Honestly, I don't think she's really met any Christians. I mean, "these are the people in your neighborhood" style, sure. But I doubt she has any meaningful relationships with anyone that she's conciously aware is Christian.

My rabbi spoke about him at our shul dinner on Sunday night.

Said words to the effect of: I know a lot of you may be feeling uncomfortable and conflicted about this, but the thing to remember is, a good man is dead; and people who have been our friends are feeling orphaned by his death.

*nods* Yeah.
