At age 78, everyone seems to be viewing him as a short-term pope, an experienced senior administrator who will keep the church going while it absorbs JPII's legacy.

It was interesting to me that pundits are convinced the college was torn between electing a transitional pope and a dynamic Latin American. Makes me wonder how Latin America got so lucky?

By having the fastest-growing Catholic population in the world (while Europe's is actually shrinking), and by constituting about 35% of the Church.
