Kingdom of Heaven. Yes, they didn't have arquebuses then. And Saladin attacked the wrong wall. And it all could have been about forty minutes shorter. And WTF stop-and-go! cinematography. You can go on and make your cynical list of what was wrong with this historical epic, and be sure to mention the use of Patrick Cassidy's Vide Cor Meum, which they lifted cue for cue from Hannibal for Chrissakes, and how Jerusalem looked heckuva lot like Helm's Deep there at the end -- I'll be right there with you.

But.

Orlando Bloom did it for me in a way that Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson did not, in this film. He was a believer -- he was damn convinced of his ideal and his duty. And that was his entire job in the film, and it worked.

Unrelated to Saracens, congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] sovay for her brilliant PW review. Great minds?

ETA: Thank you, Sophie, for allowing me to scratch the Hannibal quite nicely and conveniently, as my Hannibal CD somehow got a hole in it. No, I don't know.

I need to pick your brain for my Nano... what do you know about moshiach folklore? Particularly chassidic folklore?

I'm not up on moshiach folklore except as applies during the Holocaust, I'm afraid. Ummm. Yaffa Eliach Sonenson writes some good Chasidic folklore books that the library generally has.

Golem folklore I'm up on. Pity you need moshiach and not a golem.

I might could use a golem or three actually...

I remember somewhere hearing or reading that Moshiach would be born on the 10th of Tevet... and something about what he would be named. Nosson? I just don't remember where and have been unable to locate any sources. I also don't want every thing to be Lubavitch minhag based, and that is what I know. :(

Yay for KOH! And also not yay, but overall I think it was worth viewing. I also thought Jerusalem = Helm's Deep occasionally. What I don't like is how real history is at least as interesting as fictionalized history, but they always insist on changing it.

Also, Alexander Siddig? Sexiest Man Ever. Why was he not on screen more?

Heh. On the strength of one episode of Deep Space Nine—keep in mind that I watched perhaps a dozen overall; I am not a fan—I imprinted completely on Dr. Bashir. Now you've made me want to see Kingdom of Heaven just for Alexander Siddig's scenes. May I ask whom he plays?

He's the...guy. Named...something. He meets Balian on the beach early in the movie, and there's like, pretending to be a servant or something, and then later he's like Saladin's buddy/protege something something. The guy who says, "Your enemies will know your quality before they meet you."
