Part of me wants to go see Munich. Part of me thinks that would be extraordinarily ill-advised. And I doubt, anyway, it's even playing where we are.

It's funny, I've always considered myself a sort of pottering-about, lackluster Zionist who's ready to yield the argument for an independent Jewish state in Israel to whatever solution costs the least total lives of any religious persuasion -- but I'm sparked and angered and somewhat offended at the idea of Spielberg at the helm of this movie. More candy-dipped, middle-ground-snuggling modern Jewish history is not what we need.

Grr bark bark.

*nonetheless shines up her one delicate fragment of Straight, for Eric Bana*

In other news, today we found a surprisingly beautiful menoyre in a Wegmans.

See, I'm wary simply because it's Spielberg: I was going back over his films and realizing that there's maybe three I like, and one of them is Duel (before he was famous). I do still want to see Empire of the Sun. But he should be kept away from scripts with aliens at all costs.

I'm not sure I have an opinion that counts, but I have epic ambivalence toward this movie. Like, I really don't like the Spielberg does things. Schindler's List is kind of ok I think, in large part because simply by telling that sort of hero story something very right was accoomplished, facts be damned.

This one, no. Aaron Stein (I think that's his name), who wrote Counterstrike, was on NPR, and they were all, "Does it bother you that this is only sorta vaguely inspired by reality?" And he said no, he expects that of a movie. But I always thingk if you tell a story as truly as it's known, you can make even more powerful drama. Unless you're you know, Spielberg. Urk.

Reviews I've gotten, both official and from people I know, have said that the film really has no stance on Zionism or Israel. It's ana action movie.
