This episode of Selkie Imitates 12-year-old Girl brought to you by Manischewitz. Manischewitz, inventor of the cracker which can double as a cutting board and the honey cake which can double as a sponge.

Your irrational dislike of Tam Tams will pass...

It would, if it were not rational. However, years of tam tam cream cheese sandwiches for lunch . . . it is NOT irrational. It is in fact transcendental. Like Gelfond's constant. Only with more MURDEROUS RAGE. And less cream cheese.

Your mother was cruel.

Who/what is Chabad?

Chabad is the American Friends of Lubavitch Hasidism. There's an outpost in nearly every town of any size.

Why did they hang up on you? Did you bring the Heeb Crazy, Selkie? :D

Why no! :-) I called to inquire as to a seder kit.

They hand them out, lots. In the mitzvah mobile, and no I'm not kidding. My boss just missed the hand-out dates.

The Mitzvah Mobile is the coolest thing I've heard of all day. :D

What does a Seder Kit have in it? Candles and readings and recipes and stuff?

Usually a bebby glass kiddush cup, a glass or plastic seder plate, recipes, how-to cards for observing the holiday, yeah. They're vital for the simple reason that seder plates are OMG SO EXPENSIVE. Most people I know don't own one, because we're all still fecking off back to our families for Pesach.

Erm. Yes.
So...
How did asking for one make them hang up on you?

No idea! We were cruising along all right, but he asked for my name and number and when I gave it [Selkie Wife'sChristianlastname] he hung up while I was speaking.

Sure the connection didn't just break or something?

Or did he think you were Christian?

I'm betting the combination of Decent Conversational Yiddish with Neutral Firstname, Totally Christian Lastname fried all circuits with Reb Moti.

Dude! Something!

I just found out your marinara and noodles did not ship. Rawr. I hope the Frolic Bears fill the void.

The marinara did, just not the noodles. I plan to make matzoh lasagna instead :P

Oh my God, so THAT's what I saw!

When I lived in New York City in 2002 I ran into an RV bearing a banner that said "The Mitzvah Tank" literally twice. The same RV in two different places. Though a sign in the window said they were giving out Pesach candles I was, understandably, confused (for a gentile raised and bred in Utah back when it was much more Mormon than it is today).

A three year mystery is now solved. THANK YOU SELKIE!

That would be pretty odd. I know lots of Jews with "Christian" last names, and I imagine the Chabad folks do too.

That was meant to be a reply to your last comment to [livejournal.com profile] debka_notion.

In retrospect, it's probable the connection was just lost. Bitterness in the face of mass hypocrisy dies hard in me, though. It's a failing.
