I might actually understand that song now.

I always thought, you know, it was like a toy blue canary someone had thrown out, and "by the lightswitch" was an expression like "by jove" or something....

Hey! Unrelated to canaries, because we have cats, where are you staying for BEA? No worries either way, just trying to see what's going on. We have a spreadsheet, you know. :-D

Check out the verse about the "primitive ancestry" now.

AND COUNTLESS SCREAMING ARGONAUTS!

Well, I'm not sure that verse is affected by the whole Blue Canary verse....

I kind of assumed that it was all deconstructed postmodernism. Once we got out of the alley we could be anywhere; I just assumed he was looking at a picture while sitting in a museum or something.

Oh, it's affected.

Once you figure out what the blue canary in the outlet by the light switch actually is, the rest of the song makes a weird but coherent kind of sense.

Hint: it's a little glowing friend.

It's a nightlight, isn't it? *puzzled*

Yes.

And the primitive ancestry of a nightlight? Is a lighthouse. That stands on rocky shores and keeps the beaches shipwreck-free.

:)?

Oho! I get it now. I always had visions of like, the Trojans. 'Cause of Jason and the Argonauts.

No, yeah, see, the little blue birdie would FAIL at that, and kill off Jason AND COUNTLESS SCREAMING ARGONAUTS. And that is why I love that song.

I thought, like. He was a member of a tribe who guarded the shores and killed Jason and his Argonauts by mistake. Mistaken identity, that kind of thing.

I actually sorta like my interpretation better. :D

Well, it's TMBG. They are open to vast interpretation.

You're a pair of total loonies.

Extremely likeable loonies (*grin*), but loonies nevertheless.

What on earth were you singing?

I was singing 'Birdhouse In Your Soul', I think it's called, by They Might Be Giants. My wife favoured a version of a counting ballad done by Great Big Sea.
