I'm going to be gone for a month, starting Monday. I'm trying to borrow a laptop from someone with a spare, but it's unlikely because, though they are a thoughtful person, they are also rather scatterbrained and as apt to send me a pot of red currant jam as a laptop.

Usually I'm good at finding computers by veritable sense of smell, but I have no idea where I'll be and what the public facilities-for-computing will be like.

And I'm getting a cell phone.

So many years have I resisted the vile pull of such technology... Not to mention the fact that I no longer have credit and will have to put down a deposit, like the little financial derelict I am. I hope Verizon has a really, really simple phone with not a lot of buttons... I'm bad with buttons...

(Well, some sorts of buttons. The other kind, I'm actually quite proficient at managing, with one hand, with my eyes blinded, with my teeth...)

Prrrrrr. What? Where was I? Huh?

Yaaaaaaagh!

I'm going to vanish on Monday, I really need a computer, I want to see POA, I need work shoes while I'm at it, I think I made an enemy today, I want to quit and go home, I don't have any idea how I'm going to be getting around, my mother's in a fit, and my current computer sort of died while I was at work -- training everybody and their monkey -- and lost two pages of Vilna stuff. I have no idea if I even want this job anymore. I have no idea about anything. Most likely I will leave Birmingham with new work shoes but without a computer, so bear all that in mind.

Monday, I'm not ready for it to be Monday...

Our regional coordinator is named Jack. He's really quite nice, but I was so frazzled today when I talked to him, all I could think of was naw, we named the monkey Jack!  I like him -- it's just so indicative of my mental state at that moment, you know? Utter fruitcake.

Someone ask me for a translation of something. A favorite bit of the Aeneid, or some Vilna; maybe doing that for someone will help center my mind.

There is an Amy-and-Emily lyric for every moment of this selkie's life, I tell you. Or for that matter my characters' lives. I keep trying to squish the Raissa/Fayge subtext, but it just will not go. For God's sake, the eyewitnesses thought they were damned well snogging.

(It's a good song, if you hadn't ever heard it, by the way...)

So I finished a draft run of the Big Raissa Scene. Typing it up now -- well, again -- [offers positive reinforcement to nice, sweet, kind, nice, beloved, reliable, enduring, nice computer] so will post late tonight. Aren't you all just thrilled?

Well, I am. It means I haven't completely stained my soul in coffee.
