[livejournal.com profile] villainny, [livejournal.com profile] schiarire, [livejournal.com profile] corchen and my wife have been lovely these past few days, which have been stressful to the breaking point. I'm sure everyone knows the details, re: flatmate, bad time for my wife, crap health for me. Most of our other temporary flatmates have been perfectly good as well.

However, since everyone knows Selkie is crazy and will speak her mind loudly when you finally prod and provoke her out of the kitchen, and either accepts that or doesn't, do you want to know where my wife is right now? After spending the past week running around?

Running around some more, since [livejournal.com profile] sir_gareth is an asshat and can't be arsed and would rather lounge by the pool and get shitfaced drunk.

Since [livejournal.com profile] chaos_pockets' illness, which is 100% not her fault (and we love our flatmate!) my wife has been the one shouldering the logistical load for the Millicon pickups, and the way some people have acted has disgusted me so bloody much I'm not even sure I want to go to Millicon.

So.

Staying in our flat is not your gods-given right. You're not doing us a favour. It's rather the other way around. This only applies to one person.

Coming back to our flat as a crash pad when you're too drunk or, again, can't be arsed to use self-control in some other way = not acceptable. All our available space is currently taken up by nice, considerate, friendly guests who comport themselves as adults.

We have lives, jobs and issues too. Other things are going on besides you needing a ride/ deciding not to follow through on a promised commitment/acting like a prat (fill in appropriate blank).

When we welcomed people into our home, we really meant it. You are welcome. You are all welcome. Eat our grub, drink our drink, watch our cable -- that was expected and encouraged.

But please act like something slightly above the better class of show dog. And respect my wife, above all, and all the stuff she's doing for you -- or I'll get really really angry.

I appreciate everything all three of you have done for me. Just so you know. I hate, hate, hate that I am essentially useless, and wish I could help. But hopefully I will not always be useless. And until then, much love and soon we will have bread and cheese night!

Not that this has a thing to do with anything -- it's just me getting my linguist on, I guess -- but this post reminded me that I don't know when was the last time I saw you refer to [livejournal.com profile] darthrami by name. Or by anything other than 'my wife', now that I think about it. (Except a couple of times in subject lines where you also refer to yourself in third person.

Huh. Curious.

I think it's because she doesn't use names on her LJ, just initials, so I try to respect her privacy policies; and I a) don't use initials because it's confusing and we know too many people yclept S., J., or N., and b) never got into calling her Rami, like most people do, so don't think of the LJ handle as origin or extension of an often-used nickname. And when I don't think of her as [Her Real Name], I think of her as My Wife.

In this specific instance, it was because the theme of the post was 'You are doing things that offend my partner with whom I share my home, and because I love her, I will stomp you.'

Two or three people behaving badly = drama and frustration for the twelve or thirteen who are a pleasure to be around, fun to talk to and courteous with their living space. Basically, the game in microcosm, where microcosm = a two-bedroom flat.

I've dubbed this weekend Real World: Milliways. I think it works. Stylish. SNAZZY.

...perhaps I ought to sleep.

Selkie, I just met you for the first time this weekend over an acid-green sour apple icee in a martini glass, but it irritates me no end to see that people have taken you and yours for granted. Just because it's a convention doesn't mean that it's an excuse to be an asshole, and though it's not my job to apologize for the people who were rude, obnoxious, demanding, and so on, I want to do it anyhow because I read this entry before I left DC and it bugged me enough that I thought about it most of the way back to the west coast.

So. Any time you and [livejournal.com profile] darthrami find yourselves in Portland, know that you have a place to stay, okay? I'm sorry some people were stupid on your turf. And as sorry as I am about them, I'm very glad to have met you.

:) Hi! Thank you for your kind comment and your consideration! It was so cool to have met you. (Portland OR or Portland ME?) Most of the issues had been resolved by the end of the con, but it was slow going there for a while. :) Next time you're up our way again, do feel free to be our guest!

Shit. Some people are at their best in new and different situations and some are at their absolute worst, aren't they.

We're on the west coast here, about 20 minutes from downtown Portland OR. I'm a native east coaster, but I've lived here for 15 years now and besides the most appropriate two-word benefit for this time of year (low humidity), I really do love it on this side of the country. The only bad thing is that most of my friends are still on the east coast. If I could bundle them up and move them here, the place would be nearly perfect.
