Man, the holiday weekend was worth it in every way, but I am exhausted. And it's one of those grey, grinding days that yes, do belong in late December, but make it very hard to forget that it was a long drive in the rain last night and I feel far away from the family and feasting.

Also, 8 people out of 30 are in the office today, and our UK office is closed for Boxing Day, so it's... a little slow here at work.

The weekend was full of highlights, including a spacious and brand-new kitchen with an induction range, my first encounter with really, truly fresh button mushrooms (when they're only three days old, they do have a taste), lots of opportunities to cook, and lots of relaxing and family time. We delivered meals to three families on Christmas morning, had chocolate bananas, and I got the recipe for a chicken liver mousse that will surely be taken from my share in Paradise. (Anything with that much gribenes may in fact be designed to send you to Paradise.)

I actually love spending time with my parents- and brother-in-law. Even if they're so mellow, sometimes it drives me up a wall. ("Shall we open presents?" "Shall we have breakfast, then open presents?" "Shall we open some presents, then have breakfast, then open the rest?" "I don't know." "I don't have an opinion." "Whatever you want to do.")

The presents themselves were wonderful and thoughtful; we got a set of china from N's parents (Lenox Maywood -- our good china has platinum on it, wtff) and N did a particularly good job this year of shopping for me, I must say, down to the marzipan drinking chocolate.

Wonderful time. It's nice to have a family, you know?
