Del Martin died. She was 87 years old, but she'd only been married to her beloved for two months.

I'd like to think I'd be strong enough to force a place in the world for myself and my wife, if no one had ever made a place for us yet. She and Phyllis Lyon did that; they fought for half a century.

There's still so much that's unfair and wrong and plain silly, and we still have to fight it. We'll fight it in the quietest ways: in our families, in our libraries, in our parks and ice cream shops and public schools. And we'll remember that our fight is easier because Del Martin sent the first rockets over into barbed-wire no man's land.

We like to use the word hero spuriously, to the point that it means almost nothing.

Until you think of someone like her.

Oh, no -- I'm sorry for her wife's loss (and indeed, the world's). :(
