If you are even mildly displeased with Obama's decision about that pesky fundie preacher, read this. I think it puts things very nicely.

I love it to death. You don't happen to have the original, do you? I lost it on a dead desktop a few years back. :(

What I really don't understand is how they can equate homosexual marriage with polygamy and then suggest that it isn't legitimate- it happens in a number of countries now, and used to happen in many, many more. It is practiced with little if any disapproval in the Bible. If gay marriage is like polygamy, it ought to be in the home stretch for easy approval- just look at your bible. Look- I'm not interested in being in a polygamous marriage, but if it works for folks who grew up with the concept, then fine. Now, I happen to think from all the sociological evidence that it's a very difficult thing to make work- but gosh darn it, I hate when people equate things that they dislike and then use the mass of things on the list to suggest that they all are not ok without checking out the state of reality. How something can be "not ok for 5000 years" when it is still practiced in the Muslim world today just baffles me.

Sorry for the off-topic tyrade.

That's what I was wondering. I was like "um, ok, but it was ok for Mormons up until statehood. It's widely excepted, both the pedastry and the polygamy, in the Muslim world." So I'm trying to figure out how those equate to them not being ok for over 5000 years, which by the way, Christianity isn't 5000 years old so if he's trying to say that it's never been ok with Christians (which I'd have to look up the very early church) his dates are still off.

I do think I missed something during the campaign though. I don't remember Obama ever being pro-homosexual. Not in his stances and not on his platform. While he condemned Prop 8, he didn't endorse any measure that would give homosexuals the same rights as everyone else. In fact, I think I remember him coming out and saying that he was against it being called marriage but thought civil unions were cool. I could be wrong, I am a lot. That's why I was so surprised by the vehemence of the homosexual community. Because I always saw him as at most ambivalent toward the homosexual community at best. So it didn't really surprise me that he chose a pastor that was anti-gay as he seemed to be at best uncomfortable with the subject.

So while yes, I can totally see why people are disappointed with his choice of pastor (me, I'm a bit ambivalent but totally get why others are up in arms about it), it surprises me that other people are so shocked and surprised.

Actually, he's gone on the record as being for the repeal of DOMA, which is huuuuuuuuge. I'm not holding my breath or anything, but honestly, while yeah, the M-word thing is pesky, and a whole box of monkeys (or something.), that right there would allow all gay couples to, under federal law, have equal rights (assuming they'd be willing to travel somewhere that grants marriage to same-sex couples, and live in a state that recognizes said marriage. which, hey, I'd move if it meant I'd have equal rights).

Ok, then I did miss something big. (Which doesn't suprise me as homosexuality is still pretty much illegal punishable by death here in the Muslim world so yeah, they really wouldn't be reporting that) and way cool! Because he should be because that's only fair and right!

And I understood why the GBLT groups were up in arms over the Pastor, I missed the part where Obama was probably the most gay rights friendly politician we've had like evah!

I don't really understand why they've picked that guy. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And yeah that article gets at what bugs me in no time flat, though I was momentarily distracted by the 96 year old mom making phone calls for Obama. Adorable.

yeah, Warren is as confused, historically inaccurate, bigoted and all the rest of it as any stripe of Christians, and Southern Baptists in particular, always are. If Obama feels it necessary to have a minister there, and apparently he, or the presidential machine, does, then you can expect it (the minister) to have wrong-headed ideas.

I have got past ever being surprised about anything religious people can do.

Or say, with a straight face, and think God told them to say it.

Still, consider if it weren't Obama with his admittedly ambivalent "stance" on gay questions, it would be McCain/PALIN....

baby steps, children.
