Verdict: About 20% hype.

Two of N's bosses gave her a $120 gift card for Dean and DeLuca, a place where normally we fear to tread.

Dean and DeLuca is the only vendor in the country authorized to sell pata negra jamon Iberico -- that's Spanish for Pricey Happy Acorn Pig With Black-Toed Footie-Wooties -- to the public, and they do indeed sell it, to the mournful tune of $100 a pound.

N bought us a quarter pound while I stood at the counter and made wail and moan over the price.

We ate a tiny bit of it in the car, and it does indeed do something besides act like overpriced prosciutto. It's dark, sharp, and maybe a little acorny, with a buttery minerally taste to the fat.

Worth my money? Likely not. Worth someone else's money? Sure.

I love to go into the Dean and Deluca on Prince & B'way and walk around. I rarely buy more than a latte there.

I have been under a culinary rock. What is this costly pig of which you speak?

http://www.tienda.com/reference/ibericoquest.html tells the whole expensive story.

Also tasty and bought with free money: siggi's pomegranate passionfruit skyr. :)

Dean and DeLuca are supplied by the only authorized distributor in the US, but they are not the only authorized vendor. Fermin USA also supplies to numerous restaurants and specialty food purveyors nationwide, including Formaggio Kitchen here in Boston, which periodically carries the highest grade jamon, the Ibérico de bellota.

First time I had it, I thought it was so good I nearly cried. Though I also didn't pay for it -it was part of a new product tasting- I have promised myself that one day I will.
