Okay, so the Irish government is smoking the special crack, and has been deporting people, and is trying to make citizenship a non-birthright (what, the island's not big enough? People starting to fall off the dog's back?).

I'm worried about Aiain. He was born in France, you see, as far as I know. I have no idea how the citizenship-thing affects him, as his mother (and his father, one supposes) was an Irish citizen. She was Resident Alien here (please, repress all jokes...)

Bleh. So confusing. Basically, if they amend their constitution and close themselves off like that -- really, a move to deny the children of illegal workers any sort of decent life, I think -- what happens to a noncitizen boy living in the custody of citizens?

They've been voting for half a day already; let's hope for a number of reasons the referendum does not go.

If either parent (or grandparent) was an Irish citizen, then one automatically qualifies for citizenship. In fact, if one's grandparent was a citizen, one could claim citizenship, proceed never to live in the country, and give one's own grandchildren the right to be Irish citizens, because apparently Irishness is all about the genetics nowadays, instead of being, oh I don't know, a nationality or something.

So he's a citizen (if he doesn't have an Irish passport, I'd say one should be got now).
