'Nny told me to do it.

The avatar is like a Rorschach inkblot, or the Draw-a-House/Person/Tree Test, or any work of art. It is selected from personal imagination. Consciously or unconsciously, people condense a multitude of meaning into it. They project their personality into it - who they are, who they wish to be, what they fear, what moves them.

So here's an idea. Choose one of your icons, and post it up in your journal. Then ask people to comment with the first thing that comes to mind when they see that icon- whether it's associated with the image, the text, or with the identity/mood they project on you when you're using it, whatever. Free association. See if anything fits.

I have fancier icons, but I love this one at the moment.

[livejournal.com profile] darthrami made the icon, Johannes Vermeer made the painting. It's actually quite a small painting. It just impacts hugely on my visual psyche.

Hmm, okay. Well, I make the obvious artistic connection and then I think of the movie, and then I think of Scarlett Johansson.

...and then it all just sort of dissolves into vague lustful daydreaming, really, because that girl is gorgeous.

I think of the book, and the descriptions of color-mixing. Lovely. The painting just glows.

I know it's not a Rembrandt painting, and that it's from the film, but not having seen the film I think of him and the myth about how he always saw and painted the godliness in people, even if it wasn't there. The girl looks really beautiful and innocent, and alos a bit androgynous, as if she was one of God's angels.

She seems trapped.

I like her shy hopefulness, always have since I first saw her. But since it's you asking-- the first thing that popped into my head was "she has her hair covered."
