That reminds me of another favorite children's book: Herbert- I think it was somethign like The Five Lives of Herbert, or something like that: in 5 days he turns into an elephant, a kangaroo, a chicken, another thing that is running away from me right now, and finally a capybara. And then the next day, his friend (a girl), turns into a snake...
